Burst Test on Tissue (Ball-Burst Test)

Additionally to the tensile strength, the bursting strength according to ISO 12625 is an important characteristics of tissue materials. With a burst test the penetration of a sheet by a rigid body is simulated.
The specimen is horizontally clamped between two plates, which have a centric circular clearance. With a constant speed, a posished ball penetrates the specimen in the center of the clearance. Measured values are the maximum force (bursting force) and the bursting index (bursting force related to the specimen´s grammage).
The test fixture is designed for a most simple handling. The specimen is placed upon the lower plate of the fixture and the machine is then started. Specimen clamping is performed automatically and consequently the test is carried out without any influence of the operator.
The wide force measuring range avoids that a load cell must be changed: using a 100 N load cell, even forces below 1 N are measured with the required accuracy. Therefore, materials having extreme characteristics or research investigations can be carried out with high reliability.
Even results exceeding the usual range of 5 to 20 N are exactly captured. Additionally, the force-deformation-behaviour of a material can be analysed, as a testing machine always captures the deformation values, too.
