Paper thickness is measured for various reasons: 

The stiffness of paper and carton are dependent on the thickness. Therefore, an precise thickness measurement is critical in the stiffness of a carton and processability in a packing or printing machine. If the weight per unit area and thickness of a paper is known, the weight-referenced volume can be calculated. This is important for the transportation of larger amounts as well as for the processing of these materials.
