Increasing efficiently testing with various loads

Manufacturers of polyethylene normally test at 2.16 kg and at 21.6 kg. Two separate tests are often needed for this. ZwickRoell's Aflow can combine both tests in one. And testXpert III testing software helps define the multi-stage test. In this way, specimens can be successively tested in one test with different weights and without mechanical adaptation.

The APC function – automatic optimization of measurement intervals

When measuring flow rates, measurement intervals must be set so that the measurement times are as great as possible, and in the case of MVR measurement, the measurement travel is as great as possible. This makes the method highly accurate. When outside of the optimal range, the number of measurement errors increases rapidly.

The Mflow and Aflow extrusion plastometers are equipped with the APC function. This function measures the speed of the piston shortly before actual measurement begins. Using this information, the best possible type of control, meaning travel or time control, is selected and set for the best suited measurement interval for the expected MVR value. Time-consuming pretests are no longer necessary and the process required for programming tests is reduced to setting a few test parameters that apply to all materials to be tested.

Correct Specimen Alignment

In the case of brittle specimens, or in creep and fatigue tests, the exact alignment of the load string is critical to obtaining accurate test results. Small angular errors and offsets must be able to be detected (strain-gauged specimen) and then corrected mechanically. For this purpose, ZwickRoell offers a special alignment fixture and the software function for aligning specimens.

Automatic correction for machine deformation

testXpert III testing software offers the unique option of eliminating materials testing machine self-deformation while achieving high-precision measurement of components, without the need for additional extensometers. 

  • The "Determine correction curve" test program allows testing system self-deformation to be measured quickly and easily for each test arrangement.
  • For this, a force-deformation curve is recorded once with no component present. In other words, the compression platens are loaded up to machine nominal force and the resulting curve is saved in the system as a correction curve. 
  • The assignment of the correction curve to the corresponding test arrangement is saved as a system configuration in "Set up testing system", so that even with different test arrangements the right correction curve will always be loaded.
  • In the actual test, deformation correction takes place online. The amount of correction is automatically equal to the deformation of the correction curve at the corresponding force. This enables determination of extremely precise deformation values, including in compression tests on components for which an extensometer cannot be used. 
  • Another important point is that deformation correction takes place directly in the electronics. Control directly to this channel is possible, enabling precise travel to the set targets for the deformation, when testing springs for example. In systems lacking this function the deformation target would not be attained, resulting in inaccurate determination of the relevant force characteristic values.
