New Opportunities for Young Indians in Chennai—

Together with the NGO Don Bosco Mondo e.V., Zwick Roell AG started a Zwick testing machine operator training program in 2016 for young Indians. The program's focus are metals and plastics testing. The goal is to train underprivileged youth in the poorest living conditions to become testing machine operators. The training program offers these youth a better future by helping them acquire the expertise needed to start a career.

Beginning in the summer of 2016, the Zwick Roell Training Academy at the Don Bosco Tech Campus, located in the heart of one of Chennai’s poorest districts, will train disadvantaged youths to become testing machine operators. Zwick Roell leased an empty hall here, which it then renovated and equipped with state-of-the-art materials testing machines. The equipment ranges from various static testing machines to hardness testing devices, a pendulum impact tester and a melt index testing instrument. Two instructors employed for the training program will qualify six to twelve young people to become materials testing machine operators each year. One training focus will be on testing metals and plastics. Zwick Roell will additionally use the laboratory for customer demonstrations and contract testing.

“Our project in Chennai is designed to help young people who normally do not have access to a decent education to learn an appealing occupation and, by building on this, to take control of their own lives. India is a fascinating country – we benefit from our Indian customers, so we would like to make a contribution, by means of this project, to improve training and education in India,” says Dr. Jan Stefan Roell, CEO of Zwick Roell AG.

Environmental Protection and Sustainability

Sustainable company management and business operations are important to the Zwick Roell Group. We are holistically responsible for our products and processes. We operate our company sustainably for the future of our planet and our children.   We believe that operating sustainability is our future's return on investment and we must run our business so it is in harmony with economic success, environmental protection, and social responsibility.

We are a CO2-neutral company

  • In 2014 Zwick became the first materials testing machine manufacturer to compensate for its calculated greenhouse gas emissions through the purchase of carbon offset certificates. Future plans include a further expansion of this ecological commitment.
  • To offset the calculated CO2 emissions from the company's main site in Ulm, Germany, Zwick has become a member of the Vorarlberger Klimaneutralitätsbündnis 2025 (Vorarlberg Climate Neutrality Alliance 2025). The Alliance compensates for CO2 emissions by means of high-quality carbon offset certificates for international projects such as afforestation programs in Costa Rica and Uganda or investments in wind energy in Taiwan.
  • In 2015 Zwick offset 5,500 tons of CO2 emissions. Included in this are direct and indirect emissions from Zwick's Ulm plant (purchase of natural gas and heating oil, operation of company cars, electricity consumption) plus defined indirect emissions arising from the company's operations, such as business trips by rail or air, work journeys and catering.
