These highly efficient and cost-effective extensometers offer significant advantages over strain-gage systems in terms of measuring range, accuracy and signal processing. digiClip is available from Zwick in four different versions for extension and/or change-in-width measurement. This digital system delivers uniform accuracy over the entire gage length. digiClip's compact design is achieved by miniaturizing the digital scale, while specimen loading is minimized by the close proximity of the lightweight measurement system to the specimen.

Description of operation

Zwick clip-on extensometers are designed for testing plastics and metals. In metals testing, in particular, they meet all requirements set forth by extension and change in width measurement.

There is consistent accuracy across the entire gage length in an incremental system. The clip-on extensometer's compact design is made possible by minimizing the size of the incremental scale. The lightweight measuring system is positioned very close to the specimen. Thus, the loading of the specimen is minimized.

The range of application of the digiClip clip-on extensometer is expanded even further by the number of different initial gage lengths available and through the flexible change in measurement travel that can be switched from "Tensile only" to "Tensile and compression" at extension.

Range of application

digiClip Short and digiClip Long are largely identical with regard to range of application, design, operation and the advantages and features they offer.

The difference lies in digiClip Long's extended measurement travel, which allows extensions up to 50% to be covered and makes it suitable in many cases for testing metals up to break.

The digiClip clip-on extensometer is ideal for precise modulus and yield-point determination to ISO 527-1 on rigid and semi-rigid plastics and for determining strain at maximum stress, plus in many cases strain at break on rigid plastics with low extension.

It can also be used for determining the compressive strength of plastics or determining Young's modulus for compression on metals.

Advantages and features

  • digiClip's patented digital measuring system, available exclusively from Zwick, delivers very high accuracy and measured-value stability.
  • Accuracy Class 0.5 (or better) as per ISO 9513 (first measurement point at 20µm) is achieved. The maximum error in differential movement measurement is ±1μm in the initial range, enabling measurements including the following:
    • Young's modulus measurements on plastics
    • tensile tests on metals to ISO 6892-1 Method A(1), closed-loop strain-rate control.
  • The large measurement travel (up to 40 mm) combined with high resolution (0.02 µm) enables strain measurement up to yield point on plastics, plus strain measurement up to break for many materials.
